After a gap of one month, gangsters again struck in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, as they shot and robbed a contractor in Premnagar area on Wednesday night.
Hours later, one of the gangsters was killed in an encounter with the police. However, two others managed to escape in the jungles.
The gunshots rang out in Premnagar area on Wednesday night when a group of gangsters waylaid Devraj, who was going home in Jhajhra on a two-wheeler. In a scuffle, gangsters fired at Devraj, a contractor, and decamped with his bag containing Rs two lakh and some other documents.
Soon, a police team chased the gangsters in the nearby area where one of them was shot in the encounter. Later, the gangster identified as Akram succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. Akram, a native of Shamli area in Uttar Pradesh, was a notorious gangster who was involved in several criminal cases in the past.
Devraj informed the police that three gangsters, traveling in a black car bearing a Gujarat registration number, had robbed him at gunpoint. Devraj recounted that his blue bag was snatched by the criminals contained ₹2 lakh in cash, a mobile phone, an accounts ledger, his identity card, and other documents. He further stated that after robbing him, the gangsters shot him and fled in the direction of Vishranti Resort.
During the encounter, police Inspector Naresh Rathore sustained a gunshot wound and was hospitalized.
Upon receiving news of the incident, senior officials—including Dehradun’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Pramendra Singh Dobal—inspected the crime scene before visiting the hospital to gather full details. They also inquired about the well-being of Inspector Rathore and the victim.
Meanwhile, the police has launched a severe manhunt to nab other two gangsters who had escaped into the nearby jungles of Premnagar area.
The latest incident came after a spate of murders rocked Dehradun since February this year. On March 30, Mukesh Joshi, a retired Brigadier, who was on the morning walk, was killed in gunshots fired by gangsters near Joharigaon area in Dehradun.
