Ahead of senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s two-day visit to Uttarakhand beginning June 4, the political temperature in the hill state has risen sharply, with the Congress accusing the ruling BJP of resorting to personal attacks instead of addressing public issues.

Uttarakhand Congress president Ganesh Godiyal on Wednesday alleged that the BJP was “completely rattled” by Rahul Gandhi’s upcoming visit and was attempting to divert attention from pressing concerns facing the state.

In a statement, Godiyal criticized Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and other BJP leaders for their remarks against Rahul Gandhi, saying the language being used against the Leader of Opposition was not only against democratic traditions but also hurt the sentiments of millions of Indians.

“Rahul Gandhi is coming to Uttarakhand to interact with the people, youth, ex-servicemen, farmers and Congress workers. He is also coming to raise the state’s burning issues before the public,” Godiyal said.

The Congress leader asserted that instead of expressing fear over Rahul Gandhi’s visit, the BJP should answer questions related to unemployment, migration from hill districts, inflation and development. He alleged that the ruling party was avoiding discussions on governance-related challenges by focusing on political rhetoric.

According to Godiyal, Rahul Gandhi’s visit is aimed at understanding the concerns of different sections of society and strengthening the Congress party’s connect with the people of Uttarakhand ahead of future political battles. He claimed that the BJP’s reaction reflected its nervousness over growing public dissatisfaction.

“The people of Uttarakhand are watching everything closely. They understand the difference between truth and propaganda,” Godiyal said, adding that the electorate would ultimately judge political parties based on their performance and commitment to public welfare.

Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to arrive in Uttarakhand on June 4 and is expected to participate in a series of meetings and interactions with party leaders, workers and representatives from various social groups. His visit comes at a time when political parties have begun intensifying their activities in the state ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

The BJP, meanwhile, has been targeting the Congress leadership over a range of national and state-level issues, setting the stage for a fresh round of political sparring during Rahul Gandhi’s visit.
