In a major shake-up ahead of the upcoming T20 series, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday appointed Shreyas Iyer as the new captain of the Indian T20 team, replacing Suryakumar Yadav. The selectors also handed a maiden national call-up to teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, rewarding his impressive performances in domestic and IPL cricket.

Iyer’s appointment marks a significant comeback for the Mumbai batter, who has re-established himself as one of India’s most dependable white-ball players after overcoming injury setbacks and inconsistent form. The selectors expressed confidence in his leadership abilities, citing his successful captaincy record in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League.

The biggest talking point, however, was the inclusion of young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The talented batter has emerged as one of the brightest prospects in Indian cricket, attracting attention with his fearless strokeplay and maturity beyond his years. His selection is being viewed as part of India’s long-term strategy to build a strong pool of young players ahead of future global tournaments.

Suryakumar Yadav, who led the side in recent assignments, remains a key member of the squad despite losing the captaincy. Media reports indicated that the decision was taken keeping in mind workload management and the need to groom a stable leadership group for the coming years.

Cricket experts have welcomed the move, describing it as a blend of experience and youth. While Iyer brings leadership credentials and international experience, Suryavanshi’s inclusion signals the selectors’ willingness to invest in emerging talent.

The newly announced squad is expected to begin preparations shortly, with fans eagerly awaiting the debut of Sooryavanshi and the start of a new chapter under Iyer’s leadership. The changes underscore India’s focus on building a dynamic and competitive T20 side for the future.
