Ben Stokes says he won’t change decision of retirement

England Test captain Ben Stokes has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to one of the most remarkable careers in modern cricket. The 35-year-old all-rounder said he would retire after the conclusion of the ongoing third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, ending a 15-year journey in England colours.

He on Monday rejected suggestions he could reverse his retirement after England lost the third test by 160 runs and also series 1-2. For Stokes, a four-year captaincy reign ended with his first home defeat, and a 15-year international career ended with England facing trouble times in cricket.

Stokes leaves the game as one of England’s greatest match-winners and most inspirational leaders. He played a pivotal role in England’s historic 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup triumph, producing an unbeaten 84 in the dramatic final against New Zealand before starring in the Super Over. Just weeks later, he produced one of the finest Test innings in history with an unforgettable 135 not out against Australia at Headingley to keep the Ashes alive.

Appointed England’s Test captain in 2022, Stokes transformed the team’s approach alongside coach Brendon McCullum, ushering in the aggressive “Bazball” era that revived England’s fortunes in Test cricket.

Explaining his decision, Stokes said the physical and mental demands of international cricket had taken their toll and that he no longer had “any more fight left” to continue. He will, however, continue playing domestic cricket for Durham.

Tributes poured in from across the cricketing world, with former players, teammates and fans hailing Stokes as a once-in-a-generation cricketer whose legacy will endure for years to come.
