Veteran actor Asrani died at the age of 84 on Monday evening following a prolonged illness in a hospital in Mumbai, his family members said. His family shared the news only after his funeral was held at the Santacruz Crematorium.

Asrani was admitted to Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu four days ago due to fluid (water) accumulation in his lungs. He died around 3:30 pm.

Asrani (born 1 January 1941) was an ace actor whose Bollywood career spanned over five decades.

He has acted in over 350 Hindi films. Asrani has played the lead roles, character roles, comedic roles and supporting roles. He was best known for his role in Sholay as a jailer and characters he played in 25 films with Rajesh Khanna in lead role between 1972 and 1991.
