Amid incessant rains in Uttarakhand, the Chardham yatra has been suspended for two days, top officials said on Tuesday.

As the heavy rains pounded Dehradun, an approach road connecting the newly built Prem Nagar bridge in Dehradun collapsed disrupting the traffic completely on the Paontasaab Highway on Tuesday morning.

Dehradun District Magistrate Ashish Chauhan visited the site and said the efforts are on to repair the road and restore the vehicular traffic.

Congress leader Aryander Sharma has demanded stern action against the engineers and contractor of the Prem Nagar bridge saying such incidents were causing big embarrassment to the hill state.

Meanwhile, Dehradun and several other parts of Uttarakhand are experiencing heavy rains since last night. Ganga and its tributaries were rising at various points in the state.

Landslides have also occurred at several places blocking roads and highways.

Meanwhile, top officials said the Chardham yatra for Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri has been suspended for two days — Tuesday and Wednesday, in view of the heavy rains.

An orange alert of heavy rains has already been sounded in Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Tehri, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Udham Singh Nagar, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh and Nainital district of Uttarakhand on Tuesday. “Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and very intense to extremely intense spell of rain likely to occur at a few places in Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Tehri, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Udham Singh Nagar, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh and Nainital district of Uttarakhand,” the IMD said.

In Dehradun, Rudrapryag, and Chamoli districts, schools have been closed as precautionary measure.
