Buckling under the pressure of the cockroach Janata Party (CJP), Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on Saturday that fulfilled the major demand of the striking students at New Delhi.
Immediately after the resignation, the joyous celebrations erupted at Jantar Mantar and other areas of New Delhi where striking students have gathered in large number.
The decision follows weeks of escalating nationwide protests and a high-stakes standoff at Jantar Mantar spearheaded by the CJP.
The resignation marks a turning point in the crisis surrounding alleged irregularities and paper leaks in the NEET-UG 2026 examinations. For days, thousands of CJP activists and students have maintained an indefinite sit-in in the capital, demanding total accountability and structural reforms in the national examination system.
Pressure on the Prime Minister reached a breaking point this week after a series of clashes between students and police which resulted in dozens of injuries among protesters, further fueling public outrage.
Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, had also intensified their attacks on the government, accusing the administration of failing to protect the future of the nation’s youth and protecting those responsible for the “total capture” of the education system.
Earlier on Saturday, CJP leadership had signaled a refusal to participate in further negotiations, stating that Pradhan’s exit was a “non-negotiable” prerequisite for any dialogue.
While the government initially resisted the demand, the scale of the “Parliament March” and the growing momentum of the movement led to the eventual decision.
In his response to the developing situation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated that the welfare of the youth remains the government’s top priority and that those responsible for harming their prospects “will not be spared.”
However, CJP leaders have stated that the resignation is only the first step. The group continues to demand a public apology for the treatment of protesters and a comprehensive overhaul of the testing agencies to prevent future leaks.
