From doubt to dominance: How Argentina Silenced critics through Messi magic

PrashantNews

Just days ago, Argentina’s World Cup title defence appeared to be hanging by a thread.

After registering a lacklustre 3-2 win over Cabo Verde in the last 32 encounter, their narrow 3-2 victory over Egypt in the Round of 16 sparked a global backlash rather than celebration. While the defending champions advanced, social media platforms were flooded with allegations that Argentina had benefited from favourable decisions by the referee.

Fans and pundits questioned several controversial calls, with some even accusing FIFA of protecting Messi’s dream of another World Cup title. Hashtags alleging bias trended worldwide, and many declared that Argentina had been fortunate to escape elimination.

For the first time in the tournament, Lionel Scaloni’s side found themselves battling not only opponents on the pitch but also a storm of criticism off it.

Many believed Argentina had been exposed. Their defence looked vulnerable, their midfield lacked rhythm, and despite Messi’s brilliance, the team appeared overly dependent on their legendary captain. Predictions of an early exit became increasingly common as critics argued that stronger opponents would punish their weaknesses.

But champions are often defined by their response to adversity. Instead of allowing the criticism to divide the squad, Argentina used it as motivation.

The transformation became evident in the quarterfinal against Switzerland. The Albiceleste produced arguably their finest display of the tournament, defeating a disciplined Swiss side 3-1 with authority. Their midfield pressed relentlessly, the defence remained organised, and the attack moved with far greater fluidity. Most importantly, Argentina looked like a complete team rather than one relying solely on moments of Messi magic.

Messi, while once again influential, no longer carried the burden alone. The supporting cast stepped up, creating chances, winning crucial duels and defending with renewed confidence. The performance sent a clear message that Argentina had rediscovered the balance that made them world champions four years ago.

That resurgence continued in the semifinal against England. Facing one of the tournament’s most balanced teams, Argentina displayed maturity, tactical discipline and clinical finishing in a thrilling 2-1 victory. Messi orchestrated the attack with his trademark vision and creativity, but the team’s collective effort proved equally decisive. Every player contributed, from the tireless midfield to the resolute backline that withstood England’s late pressure.

The contrast with the Egypt encounter could not have been more striking. The nervous, vulnerable side seen in the Round of 16 had evolved into a confident, cohesive unit capable of controlling the biggest matches.

Now, as Argentina prepare to face Spain in the World Cup final, the narrative has changed dramatically.

The controversy that once overshadowed their campaign has been replaced by admiration for their football. Whether or not the criticism after Egypt was justified, Argentina answered it in the most convincing way possible—not through words or social media debates, but through commanding performances against Switzerland and England.

The defending champions are no longer being discussed as fortunate survivors. They are once again being recognised as genuine champions, standing just one victory away from retaining football’s biggest prize.
