Enraged President Donald Trump imposed a new 10 percent global tariff on all nations hours after the US Supreme Court struck down the ones, he imposed calling the ruling “terrible” and lambasting the justices who rejected his trade policy as “fools”.
Most of the nations were closely watching the developments after the US top Court set aside Trump’s sweeping global tariffs under an emergency power law that he imposed on various countries including India, media reports said on Saturday.
The ruling will have a rippling effect on recent US trade deals with India and other countries, experts said.
The 6-3 decision is expected to have significant implications for the US economy and consumers, media reports said.
The US top Court found that the Constitution very clearly gives Congress the power to impose taxes, which include tariffs. “The Framers did not vest any part of the taxing power in the Executive Branch,” Chief Justice John Roberts said in the ruling.
However, India has only said it was studying the developments for their implications.
Most of the other countries like Britain, France and China were also in the wait-and-watch mode.
