SC cancels Trump’s global tariffs, may have rippling effect on India

PrashantNews

In a big setback to President Donald Trump, the Supreme Court in US on Friday set aside the sweeping global tariffs that he imposed on various countries including India, saying he exceeded his authority.

The ruling will have a rippling effect on recent US trade deals with India and other countries, experts said.

The 6-3 decision is expected to have significant implications for the US economy and consumers, media reports said.

The Apex Court found that the Constitution very clearly gives Congress the power to impose taxes, which include tariffs. “The Framers did not vest any part of the taxing power in the Executive Branch,” Chief Justice John Roberts said in the ruling.
