On the World Environment Day, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Friday went for a deep sea diving near Andaman and Nicobar and said the Islands have the potential to emerge as one of the world’s most beautiful coastal tourism destinations if development is carried out while preserving the region’s fragile ecology.

In a post on Facebook, Gandhi stressed the need to strike a balance between tourism growth and environmental conservation. He said the islands could become a global tourism hub, provided ecological sustainability remains at the heart of all development efforts.

“The Andaman and Nicobar islands have the potential to become the world’s most beautiful coastal tourist hub — as long as we prioritise ecological balance and sustainable development,” Gandhi said.

The Congress leader also encouraged more Indians to visit the island territory, highlighting its natural beauty and unique biodiversity.

“I want more Indians to visit these stunning islands and witness with their own eyes the incredible treasures that India has,” he said.

Gandhi’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions over tourism development and infrastructure expansion in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago, which is known for its pristine beaches, coral reefs, tropical forests and rich marine life. Environmentalists have often emphasized the need for careful planning in the ecologically sensitive islands to ensure that tourism growth does not harm the region’s natural ecosystems.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a Union Territory of India located in the Bay of Bengal, are home to several protected areas and indigenous communities, making sustainable development a key consideration for policymakers.

Gandhi’s comments underscore the growing focus on promoting domestic tourism while preserving India’s natural heritage, with the Congress leader advocating a model of development that combines economic opportunities with environmental responsibility.
