Delhi police has arrested a couple from West Bengal for allegedly killing Delhi University assistant professor Dr. Debosmita Paul (42) in her flat in East Delhi’s Vasundhara Enclave and detaining their minor son in connection with the crime.
According to Delhi Police, the accused, identified as Ramprasad Das and his wife Banashree Das from Bardhaman district, had been living since 2023 in a property owned by Paul in West Bengal. Investigators said the professor had repeatedly asked the couple to vacate the premises and had refused to sell the ancestral property despite repeated approaches from the duo.
Police allege that after receiving a final warning to vacate the property, the couple conspired to eliminate Paul. They allegedly travelled nearly 1,400 kilometres from West Bengal to Delhi along with their 13-year-old son, whom investigators believe was brought along to avoid suspicion.
The professor, who taught English at Shivaji College, was found dead in her sixth-floor apartment at Satyam Apartments on June 4. Her sister alerted police after repeated phone calls went unanswered and discovered the body inside the locked flat. Investigators found severe injuries on Paul’s head and body, indicating a brutal assault.
CCTV footage allegedly captured the accused entering the apartment complex wearing masks before visiting the professor’s flat. Police said technical surveillance, CCTV analysis and travel records helped trace the suspects to West Bengal, where they were arrested within days of the crime.
The case has shocked Delhi University’s academic community, with colleagues and students mourning the loss of a respected teacher. Police said further investigation is underway.
