Earthquake hits Kolkata, other areas of W Bengal

An earthquake of 5.3 magnitude on Friday hit West Bengal with its epicentre at Taki at around 01.22 PM.

The shocks of the tremor rattled Kolkata and nearby areas with people scurrying for cover in the city.

While USGS said the tremor was of 5.3 magnitude with epicentre at Taki, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said it measured 5.5 on the Ritcher scale with epicentre in Bangladesh.

However, there was no loss of life and property in the entire state.

Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar was addressing a gathering when the earthquake was felt in Kolkata. “Should I stop,” asked Majumdar at the venue.
