Days after the cancellation of the NEET-UG exams, a 23-year-old girl who was preparing to reappear for the crucial medical test allegedly committed suicide at her home in Dehradun.
Riya Kumari Thapa has left behind a note apologising to her parents and blaming herself for her “incompetence”. The suicide note recovered from the room read: “I am sorry for being a burden. It’s nobody’s fault but my own incompetence. The best option is to end it. I love you, I’m sorry.”
Thapa, was found hanging in her room after her family broke open the door when she failed to respond to calls for breakfast, police said.
Thapa, who lived with her parents, was preparing for the NEET re-examination scheduled for June 21. A bright student who scored over 96 per cent in Class 12, she was also in the final semester of her B.Sc. degree.
Police said she had appeared for NEET multiple times and was reportedly under pressure over her studies. Preliminary inquiries suggest frustration over not achieving the desired success may have contributed to her taking the extreme step.
Police completed inquest proceedings. A post-mortem examination was not conducted at the family’s request.
Meanwhile Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday addressed a large gathering of students in Kota town in Rajasthan ahead of the re-conduct of the NEET-UG examination on June 21.
