Silver Jubilee: CM presents rosy picture of Uttarakhand’s economy but no debt figures

With Uttarakhand in silver jubilee celebration mode, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Saturday presented a rosy picture of the state’s economy saying the GSDP has grown 26-fold in the last 25 years to reach Rs 3.78 lakh crore with a 17-fold increase in per capita income that has touched to Rs 2.61 lakh.

The state’s budget of has now reached ₹1 lakh crore for the first time in the state’s history in 2025-26 which was once Rs 4500 crore in the first year when Uttarakhand was formed, Dhami said.

Significantly, Dhami did not talk about the debt profile of Uttarakhand which experts said has put a big burden on the state’s economy.

Dhami also promised to create 10,000-12000 more government jobs in the next one year and said over 26,000 jobs have already been given. This job figure will reach 36,000 to 38,000 in the next one-year, top officials said.

At a press conference in Dehradun to mark the beginning of the silver jubilee celebrations, the Chief Minister said Uttarakhand is completing 25 years of its establishment on November 9th and this is the perfect time to showcase its achievements.

In this regard, he mentioned the implementation the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), strong land laws, anti-conversion laws, anti-riot laws, anti-copying laws, 10 % reservation in government jobs for statehood activists, and 30 % horizontal reservation for women in government jobs.

The Chief Minister said since the Global Investors Summit in 2023, investments worth over ₹1 lakh crore have been grounded in the state. “This process is still underway,” he said. A venture fund of ₹200 crore has been established for startups.

The Chief Minister said under the Antyodaya Yojana, 1.85 lakh families in the state are being provided three cooking gas cylinders annually, while 1.65 lakh women have become self-reliant through the Lakhpati Didi Yojana.

The Chief Minister said Kedarnath shrine area has now become grander through redevelopment works and the goal is to complete all construction works within a year time. He said that similarly, the master plan work is being done in Badrinath with an amount of Rs 300 crore, while the construction of ropeway to Kedarnath and Hemkund is also about to begin.

He said that the construction of 48 ancient temples and Gurudwaras of Kumaon is being progressed by connecting them in the form of a circuit, and the work on the Delhi-Dehradun elevated road has also reached its final stage, after completion of which the journey between the two cities will be reduced to two to two and a half hours. He said that the 70 percent of the work on the Rishikesh-Karanprayag rail line has also been completed. The trial run of the first train to Biasi would be conducted by next year, he said.
