Student dies after hit by javelin in Champawat

An inquiry has been ordered after a student died when he was hit by a javelin in Champawat area of Uttarakhand.

Somendra Bohra (19), a Polytechnic student was playing football in Champawat, died after being hit by a javelin during a rehearsal for a sports competition, police said on Sunday.

The accident occurred on Saturday at the Goral Chowd ground, where the Champawat Government Polytechnic College sports competition was being held. Some students were practicing for the competition in different parts of the field when a participant threw a javelin, which struck Bohra who was playing football a short distance away, in the neck. Bora collapsed on the ground immeidately.

Bora was rushed to the Champawat District Hospital, where he died.

The state sports minister Rekha Arya has ordered an inquiry into the incident, official sources said.

The student’s last rites were performed on Sunday after his father, Bhupal Singh Bohra, arrived from Gujarat. District Magistrate Manish Kumar also visited the crematorium and paid tribute to the student.
