Some players take years to make their presence felt in Test cricket. Manav Suthar has done it in just two matches. From a seven-wicket haul on his Test debut against Afghanistan to a match-winning 10-wicket performance against Sri Lanka, the 24-year-old left-arm spinner has made an extraordinary start to his international career.
Suthar was the architect of India’s 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in Galle on Wednesday, claiming six wickets for 55 runs in the second innings as the hosts were bowled out for 206 while chasing 372. His six-wicket haul, added to the four wickets he took in Sri Lanka’s first innings, gave him his maiden 10-wicket match haul in only his second Test.
The performance has transformed Suthar from an exciting young prospect into a name demanding serious attention in India’s Test plans.
Suthar has already earned accolade from cricket great Sunil Gavaskar. “Manav Suthar ! Just Waoooooooooooooooo! After so long a pure magical talent in Indian team! You can’t deny the fact that he has outperformed other bowlers and with his skillset he is there for Indian cricket for long,” Gavaskar wrote on X.
Born in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, on August 3, 2002, Suthar is a slow left-arm orthodox spinner and a useful lower-order left-handed batter. His rise has been built on impressive performances in domestic cricket, particularly for Rajasthan, where he established himself as one of the team’s leading wicket-takers.
His Test breakthrough came against Afghanistan in June 2026, and he could hardly have scripted a better beginning. Suthar claimed six wickets for 33 runs in Afghanistan’s first innings and finished with a seven-wicket match haul as India crushed Afghanistan by an innings and 300 runs. He was named Player of the Match on debut.
His second Test has now taken that remarkable start to another level. Suthar took 4/76 in Sri Lanka’s first innings, including a wicket with his first delivery, before returning in the second innings to rip through the Sri Lankan batting line-up. His 6/55 helped India finish the job as the hosts were dismissed for 206.
The numbers tell their own story. After only two Tests, Suthar has already collected 17 wickets—seven against Afghanistan and 10 against Sri Lanka.
His emergence is particularly significant for India, where the young spinner is learning his trade alongside established stars such as Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav. His performances in Galle have shown patience, accuracy, flight and the ability to extract sharp turn when required.
Suthar’s rise was not entirely unexpected. He had already impressed in domestic cricket, including a seven-wicket haul in the Duleep Trophy and a standout Ranji Trophy campaign. His experience with Gujarat Titans in the IPL also exposed him to the demands and pressures of elite professional cricket.
When he received his Test cap against Afghanistan, Suthar wrote that playing Test cricket for India had been his “biggest dream.” He dedicated the moment to his family, coaches and everyone who had supported him, calling it the biggest day of his life.
Two Tests later, that dream has already produced two extraordinary chapters. And with a 10-wicket haul in Galle, Manav Suthar has announced that he is not merely in Team India to fulfil a dream— he is ready to build a long Test career for India.
