It was a day of contrasting emotions for Indian badminton fans at the BWF World Championships. While Lakshya Sen suffered a shock three-set defeat, two-time Olympic medallist P.V. Sindhu kept the host nation’s challenge alive with a confident straight-game victory at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium on Wednesday.
Sindhu, the ninth seed, defeated Canada’s Wen Yu Zhang 21-16, 21-17 to advance to the women’s singles Round of 16. The Indian controlled the contest for much of the match, producing a composed performance when the pressure was greatest.
Her victory came shortly after a major setback for the home contingent, with Lakshya Sen going down to American Garret Tan 21-19, 19-21, 17-21 in a fiercely contested men’s singles encounter.
Sen’s exit was particularly disappointing given the expectations surrounding him on home soil. The defeat also underlined the unpredictable nature of a World Championships where every match can turn on a handful of crucial points.
Sindhu, however, ensured that India’s women’s singles challenge continued. A former world champion, she remains one of the country’s most experienced players on the biggest stage and has already shown encouraging form in New Delhi. She had opened her campaign with a straight-game victory over Sophia Noble.
The Indian’s progress is important for the hosts as the championships return to the country after 17 years. With Sen now out of the men’s singles competition, greater attention will inevitably fall on Sindhu and the other Indian contenders to carry the home challenge forward.
For Sindhu, Wednesday’s victory was more than just another step towards the latter stages of the tournament. It was a timely reminder of her ability to absorb pressure and deliver when the spotlight is firmly on her.
As Lakshya’s campaign ended unexpectedly, Sindhu’s composed win provided Indian fans at the packed New Delhi arena with something to cheer about—and kept alive hopes of a memorable home World Championships.
