In 2024, Novak Djokovic at the age of 37 managed to reach the Wimbledon final where he was easily defeated by Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets. But that was the last time when Djokovic reached a grand slam final. By that time, the other three biggies — Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray had already retired. The era of the big four was almost over.
Over the course of two decades, the Big Four won a combined 69 Grand Slam titles, out of which Djokovic, with 24 Grand Slams, won the most titles, followed by Rafael Nadal with 22, Roger Federer with 20, and Andy Murray with 3.
This year, Djokovic failed to reach any of the four grand slam finals. After the defeat of the 24 grand slam champion against Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets in the US Open semifinals on Friday night in New York, the Spaniard has set up yet another classic showdown with top seed Jannik Sinner on Sunday. Obviously, tennis lovers will get yet another treat.
Welcome to the new era of big two. Already, the two biggies have clashed in the finals of French Open and Wimbledon winning one title each.
Avenging his French Open defeat, Sinner (Italy) in July this year won his maiden Wimbledon title dethroning Alcaraz 4-6,6-4,6-4,6-4 at the Centre Court. As the two tennis greats slugged it out to chase victory in the Wimbledon final, Sinner got the better of Alcaraz in the last few games to become the first Italian to win the most prestigious title.
In May, Sinner lost one of the all-time great grand Slam finals at Roland Garros against Alcaraz especially when he was leading by two sets and holding three championship points.
It was also the first time in many years that both the no 1 (Sinner) and no 2 seed (Alcaraz) stormed into the Wimbledon and French Open finals.
Interestingly, after Rod Laver, Roger Federer and Djokovic, Sinner is the fourth player to reach all the four grand slams finals in a single season.
