When the world was watching a rare celestial spectacle called red moon on Sunday, an infrequent event in the tennis world happened in the clash of “Big Two” at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.
World no 2 Carlos Alcaraz (Spain) dethroned top seed Jannik Sinner (Italy) in four sets 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the US Open Final but in the process has also split the Slams for the past 2 years, a unique record between the world’s two great players. It was for the first time in tennis history that the Big Two – Alcaraz and Sinner — won all the eight grand slam titles in the past two years, dividing equally.
Alcaraz and Sinner have created a rivalry which is beginning to transcend the sport especially after the end of Big Four era. Novak Djokovic, who was part of the BIG Four or Three comprising Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray that dominated the tennis world since 2004, has acknowledged that he was finding it now difficult to beat both the players as he is running out of gas which also indicated that his glorious tennis career studded with 24 grand slam titles was about to end.
Reigning French Open champion Alcaraz’s superior serving, an area which let him down against Sinner at Wimbledon, ensured he reclaimed the US Open title that he first won in 2022.
The 2 hour 45 minute match not only ensured the second US Open title for Alcaraz but also his return to the world number one ranking ending Sinner’s 65-week reign at the top.
Alcaraz has etched his name further into tennis history, becoming only the third player in the Open Era to win multiple US Open men’s singles titles before turning 23, joining legends John McEnroe and Pete Sampras on that list.
The men’s final was delayed by half an hour because of extra security measures put in place due to US president Donald Trump’s presence.
