After a hiatus of more than a month, gunshots rang out again in Dehradun that left Brigadier (retd) Mukesh Joshi (74) dead on Monday morning after a road rage incident between the occupants of two speeding vehicles — Scorpio and Fortuner. No arrest has been made so far, police sources said.

The gunmen travelling in the Scorpio having no registration number later fled the scene, police sources said.

Last month, two persons were killed in different firing incidents in Dehradun in the broad daylight in the city with the Doonites expressing widespread concern. A young woman was also hacked to death in in the city in February.

The latest firing incident occurred near Johari Gaon and Malsi zoo on the foothills of Mussoorie when a heated exchange occurred between the two car occupants with one Delhi registered number that led to firing killing Joshi who was on the morning walk.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a dispute erupted near Malsi Zoo on Mussoorie Road between the occupants of a Delhi-registered Fortuner and a Scorpio (with no registration number) over the refusal to give pass. During the heated exchange, the occupants of the Scorpio pursued the Fortuner and opened fire in an attempt to force it to stop, said SP (City) Pramod Kumar. The occupants of the Fortuner car also fired back, Kumar said.

But a bullet struck Joshi, a retired Brigadier, who was out for a morning walk. Joshi, was residing in Johari Gaon, was declared dead in the hospital, a police official said.

After the firing, the Fortuner vehicle went out of control near the Government Primary School in Johri village and crashed into a roadside tree. Subsequently, the occupants of the Scorpio tried to physically assault the occupants of the Fortuner and vandalized the vehicle. Two individuals traveling in the Fortuner sustained injuries during this incident and were taken to a hospital for treatment by their companions. Later, police took the occupants of the Fortuner car into custody.

Significantly, no arrest has been made so far, police said. “We have taken the occupants of Fortuner car into custody only,” confirmed a police official.

Pramendra Singh Dobal, SSP Dehradun, along with other senior officials, visited the hospital to gather information from individuals connected to the incident. Acting on the SSP’s directives, an intensive checking drive is underway to apprehend the accused involved in the incident. Dobal said the people who were travelling in the Fortuner have been taken into custody.

Efforts are being made to gather information regarding the occupants of the car by analyzing footage from CCTV cameras installed at the crime scene and on the surrounding access routes. “We are investigating the case. As and when we do all our investigations, we will brief the media,” said Rajiv Swaroop, IG Garhwal.
