Rattled by the donation scam in the Ram temple in Ayodhya, the BJP is again on the receiving end over Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s alleged involvement in the Ujjain land scam.
The two scams have surfaced at a time when the ruling BJP wants to advance the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Goa.
Finding the BJP on the sticky wicket, the opposition has trained its guns lock, stock and barrel on the saffron party. Congress general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal posted on X: “PM Modi, why have ED-CBI not knocked on the doors of MP CM Mohan Yadav? Is a 253-acre mega land scam not grounds enough to chase him and punish him for his crimes?”
After the SIT probe in Ayodhya Ram temple offering scam, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has found himself at the centre of a big controversy following allegations related to large-scale land purchases in and around Ujjain by members of his family and associated entities. The issue has triggered a fierce confrontation between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress, with both sides trading accusations and counter-accusations.
The controversy erupted after media reports claimed that since Yadav assumed office as chief minister in December 2023, his family members and firms linked to them acquired at least 137 plots covering around 168 acres of land in the Ujjain region. According to the reports, many of these land parcels are located near proposed infrastructure projects, road corridors and areas earmarked for future urban expansion under government development plans. The purchases are estimated to be worth about ₹45 crore.
The opposition Congress has alleged that the transactions raise serious questions about conflict of interest and possible misuse of official position. State Congress leaders have demanded the chief minister’s resignation and sought an independent judicial inquiry into the matter. They claim the rapid increase in land holdings linked to Yadav’s family coincided with major development announcements in Ujjain, one of Madhya Pradesh’s fastest-growing urban centres and the venue for preparations related to the 2028 Simhastha Kumbh.
The BJP, however, has strongly rejected the allegations. Party leaders have described the charges as politically motivated and baseless. The chief minister has also denied reports suggesting that his personal land holdings increased after he took office, asserting that there has been no change in his declared ownership. BJP leaders have accused the Congress of attempting to tarnish Yadav’s image without producing evidence of wrongdoing.
The controversy has also taken on a national political dimension, with opposition leaders weighing in and speculating about larger political motives behind the timing of the allegations. Meanwhile, calls for a transparent investigation continue to grow.
