Charted Accountant Vivek Agarwal had travelled to Delhi from Gurugram after his father, Radhe Shyam, a man in his seventies, had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Max Hospital in Saket for several days.
Agarwal, a Gurugram resident in his late forties who had previously served as a director at a multinational company, rented rooms at Flourish Stays, a bed-and-breakfast hotel in Hauz Rani, located close to the hospital, so that family members could stay nearby during the treatment.
The extended family staying in the hotel to spend quality time under one roof and also to take care of Radhe Shyam. Some photographs taken shortly before the tragedy show smiling faces, unaware of the horror that awaited them in the fateful morning of June 3.
All of a sudden, the disaster struck. A devastating fire broke out in the hotel, rapidly filling the building with thick smoke and flames. Panic replaced laughter as guests desperately searched for safety. For the Agarwal family, however, there was no escape.
Eight members of the family were trapped and burnt alive. Within moments, an entire branch of a family tree was wiped out, leaving behind only memories, photographs and unanswered questions. In a country where groceries of Blinkit can reach within 10-15 minutes, it was an irony that the fire tenders took nearly 50 minutes to arrive at the hotel. A total of 21 people were burnt alive including foreign nationals.
Neighbours and relatives who knew the family struggle to comprehend the scale of the loss. They remember Vivek as a warm-hearted man who valued relationships above all else. Family gatherings, festivals and celebrations were occasions he cherished. Those close to him say he always ensured that no relative felt left out.
The deaths have left an emotional void that will be impossible to fill. Homes that once echoed with conversation and laughter now stand silent. Phones that buzzed with family messages have fallen quiet. Children have lost parents, parents have lost children, and loved ones are left grappling with a grief that words cannot adequately describe.
The tragedy has also reignited concerns about fire safety in public establishments. As investigators work to determine what caused the blaze and whether safety norms were followed, grieving relatives are demanding accountability.
Yet beyond the questions of responsibility lies a far more painful reality — eight lives, bound together by love and family ties, were extinguished in a single night.
What began as a joyful family gathering ended as one of Delhi’s most heartbreaking tragedies, a reminder of how fragile life can be and how quickly happiness can turn into unimaginable sorrow.
