“The ‘goonj’ of Rahul Gandhi’s Chhatron Ki Goonj is likely to resonate far beyond the venue in Dehradun. Much like the iconic ‘thappad ki goonj’ from Bollywood blockbuster Karma, its political impact could be wider as Uttarakhand heads towards the assembly elections which are only few months away.
Far more than just a student outreach event, it has certainly achieved what the state Congress had been striving for over the past several years to bring its divided leadership together under one roof injecting fresh momentum into the party ahead of the assembly elections which are only few months away.
The Congress central leadership had struggled to achieve for years to bring the party’s warring factions together. The massive public meeting, held in poll-bound Uttarakhand, has infused fresh confidence into the Congress rank and file, with many leaders describing it as a turning point in the party’s preparations for the 2027 assembly elections.
For the first time in recent years, almost the entire state leadership was seen working in unison. Leaders belonging to different camps, who have often been at loggerheads over organisational matters and leadership issues, joined hands to ensure the success of the programme. The rare show of unity was visible both on the stage and behind the scenes, where party workers from rival factions coordinated the arrangements without any visible discord. The only difference remained was the absence of former chief minister Harish Rawat on health grounds.
Political observers say the successful event has strengthened Rahul Gandhi’s authority within the state unit. By personally leading the campaign and focusing on issues affecting students and unemployed youth, he appears to have taken the bull by the horns, shifting the party’s attention from internal rivalries to public issues that could resonate with voters.
Addressing a packed gathering, Rahul Gandhi launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in Uttarakhand over repeated paper leaks, unemployment and alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations. He argued that educational institutions and testing agencies should remain free from political influence and called for a national political consensus to restore the credibility of the examination system.
The programme assumed greater significance as it was held despite several setbacks. The Congress was forced to shift the venue after the administration declined permission for its original location. The event was also overshadowed by the death of senior Congress worker Amar Mehta, who was killed after an iron rod from a temporary tent structure collapsed during preparations a day before the programme. Rahul Gandhi paid tribute to the deceased worker and expressed solidarity with his family.
The enthusiastic participation of students, youth and party workers has lifted the morale of the Congress at a crucial juncture. Leaders believe the event has energised the organisation and provided a clear political narrative centred on employment, education and governance.
Whether the unity witnessed during ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ survives the political challenges ahead remains to be seen. However, the programme has undoubtedly given the Congress a much-needed organisational boost and reinforced Rahul Gandhi’s role in steering the party towards a more united and aggressive campaign in the run-up to the Uttarakhand Assembly elections.
