Rescuers on Saturday continued to search for survivors as the toll in the twin devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening rose to 900.

At least 3,360 people were injured in the quakes, officials said. A state of emergency has been declared in the country by the authorities. The toll is expected to rise further, the officials said.

At least 243 people have been rescued so far that include dozens of children as rescuers used drones, heat scanners and sniffer dogs to search for survivors. Hundreds of people are still missing.

First earthquake measuring 7.2 magnitude struck around 0334 hours (IST). A minute later, another temblor measuring 7.5 magnitude hit at 0335 hours (IST). The epicentres both the quakes were near Yumare.

The injured are being treated in makeshift medical facilities after dozens of buildings in the country’s north were destroyed by the two quakes, including in the capital Caracas.

UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher says almost 2,000 international rescue workers were engaged in the rescue efforts round the clock. Unofficial reports say at least 10,000 workers were engaged in one of the biggest rescue operations in the past one decade.

Authorities said dozens of structural damages to buildings have been reported.
