When Nicole Collier, a Texas lawmaker, spent the night on the floor of the House in the US, thousands of miles away in India, a group of Indian legislators also staged a record-breaking night long sit-in strike inside the well of the Uttarakhand state assembly in Gairsain on Tuesday.
During the sit-in, most of the Indian legislators also dozed off after the midnight inside the 70-member House where the ruling BJP in the hill state is locked in a political tussle with the main opposition Congress on the issue of alleged manipulation in the election of local bodies in Nainital district. “Some were seen sleeping with quilts also,” said BJP MLA Kishore Upadhayay from Gairsain as he also claimed that he too had spent night in the House in 2010.
While Collier was all alone in the House in protest after refusing to be placed under watch, the opposition legislators in Uttarakhand also chose to continue the protest for full night against the government’s alleged attempt to sway the voting for the local bodies in Nainital where the ruling party BJP won by just one vote.
The issue has also been taken up by the Uttarakhand High Court in Nainital where judges reprimanded top police cops and other officials for not doing anything to control the alleged attempt to manipulate the voting.
“We came all the way to Gairsain despite the inclement weather conditions. This is now the duty of leaders of both the ruling and opposition parties to allow the smooth conduct of the House in the monsoon session,” said Upadhayay.
As the House re-assembled on Wednesday, the slogan shouting continued. Later Speaker Ritu Khanduri adjourned the House sine die with the government hurriedly passing most of the new bills which were placed on Tuesday.
