After a series of disasters last week, the water crisis in Dehradun has aggravated with over 2.50 lakh people being affected mainly due to the extensive damage to water sources and connected pipelines caused by the deluge.
“This is the first time I am seeing such a big destruction of water tapping structures and pipelines in Dehradun,” said Prakash Kimothi, former secretary appraisal of the Uttarakhand Jal Sansathan (UJS).
However, the water supply to the affected areas has been partially restored but drinking water will be supplied only once a day, top government officials said.
They stated that nearly half a dozen drinking water sources—Bijapur Head, Bandal Head, Kesarwala Head, Purkul Head, Shahanshahi Head/Shikhar Fall Head—and their connected pipelines were damaged in the widespread devastation caused by cloudbursts, heavy rains, floods, and landslides in several areas of Dehradun on September 15th and 16th.
The widespread floods disrupted drinking water supply, affecting a population of 235,000 in 40 localities of Dehradun, an official report said.
“Temporary repairs to these damaged sources and pipelines were carried out by September 20 and water supply was partially restored,” said an official.
During this period, officials urged people to be frugal with drinking water and exercise restraint until adequate water supply is restored.
A total of 31 people died and three are still missing in the disasters that struck nine different locations in Dehradun last week, including Sahasradhara, Shikhar Falls, Jharipani, and Maldevta. Four people were also injured in these incidents. Extensive damage was caused to structures such as houses, roads, bridges, and other structures.
