The mysterious death of Twisha Sharma in Bhopal has triggered widespread outrage and intensified demands for a high-level investigation, with the victim’s family alleging dowry harassment, mental torture and attempts to destroy evidence.
The case has now become one of the most talked-about incidents drawing national attention and sparking protests outside the residence of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.
Twisha Sharma, a 33-year-old woman from Noida and a former beauty pageant contestant, was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her home in Bhopal on May 12, barely five months after her marriage to Samarth Singh, an advocate. According to the post-mortem report, the cause of death was hanging, but her family has strongly rejected the suicide theory and alleged that she was subjected to continuous harassment by her husband and in-laws.
The family members of Trisha have refused to take her body so far but the police is insisting that it could start decomposing.
The victim’s father, Navnidhi Sharma, has accused the police of mishandling the investigation and claimed that influential people were trying to shield the accused. He even threatened self-immolation during a protest demanding justice for his daughter. The family has sought a second post-mortem examination at AIIMS Delhi, alleging that there were visible injury marks on Twisha’s body before her death.
Adding further complexity to the case, CCTV footage from the house has emerged, showing Twisha walking toward the terrace shortly before she was found unconscious. Investigators are now trying to reconstruct the final moments leading to her death. Family members claim Twisha made a distress call to her mother minutes before the incident, allegedly speaking about harassment at her matrimonial home. They allege that the phone disconnected abruptly after her husband entered the room.
The police have registered a case against the husband and mother-in-law under charges related to dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. However, Twisha’s husband is reportedly absconding, prompting authorities to issue a lookout notice and initiate steps to cancel his passport. Special police teams have also been formed to trace him.
The Sharma family has further demanded that the investigation be shifted outside Madhya Pradesh, claiming they no longer trust the local police. They have accused certain sections of attempting a “posthumous character assassination” of the deceased through selective leaks and allegations.
