Spain booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 the semifinal with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Belgium in a thrilling last 8 encounter at Los Angeles Stadium on Friday.
The win set up a blockbuster last-four clash against France, who defeated Morocco 2-0 in the opening quarter-final.
Spain, one of the tournament favourites, dominated possession from the outset and looked determined to dictate the pace of the contest. Their patient build-up play repeatedly stretched the Belgian defence, while quick transitions created several opportunities in the opening half.
The breakthrough eventually came after sustained Spanish pressure, as Fabian Ruiz converted a well-worked attacking move to take a deserved lead in 30th minute.
Belgium, however, responded positively and gradually found their rhythm, relying on swift counter-attacks and direct play to trouble the Spanish backline. Their persistence paid off when they restored parity, with a Charles De Ketelaere’s goal in 41st minute ensuring the two sides headed into a tense battle for supremacy in the second half. The score was 1-1 till the half-time.
With the match finely balanced, Spain once again showcased their composure and technical superiority. Their midfield-controlled possession in the closing stages, forcing Belgium to defend deep while limiting the Red Devils’ attacking opportunities. The decisive goal arrived after another flowing move, giving Spain a crucial 2-1 advantage with a Mikel Merino’s goal in 88th minute after Belgium goalkeeper Senne Lammens spilled a shot just minutes after replacing the injured Thibaut Courtois. Spain’s star striker Lamine Yamal again failed to find the net despite getting many opportunities.
Belgium pushed desperately for an equaliser in the final minutes, committing more players forward in search of a lifeline. Spain’s defence, however, remained disciplined under pressure, while goalkeeper and backline combined effectively to deny Belgium any clear scoring chances. After several minutes of tense stoppage time, the final whistle confirmed Spain’s passage into the semi-finals.
The victory extended Spain’s impressive run in the tournament, having earlier defeated Austria in the Round of 32 before overcoming Portugal in the Round of 16. The Spaniards have displayed remarkable consistency throughout the competition, combining defensive solidity with an attack capable of producing decisive moments in crucial matches.
For Belgium, the defeat brought an end to an encouraging campaign. After edging Senegal in the Round of 32 and producing an emphatic win over the US in the last 16, the Red Devils fell just short against one of the tournament’s strongest sides.
Spain will now face France in what promises to be one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament. With both European giants in outstanding form, the semi-final is expected to be a high-quality contest as they battle for a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final.
