Spain produced a commanding display to defeat a lacklustre France 2-0 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semifinal on Tuesday, booking their place in the World Cup final for the first time in 16 years and ending Les Bleus’ title dream in emphatic fashion.
The 2010 world champions controlled the contest from the opening whistle, dominating possession, dictating the tempo and leaving France chasing shadows for most of the evening. Their slick passing, relentless pressing and clinical finishing proved too much for a French side that never looked capable of mounting a serious comeback.
Spain struck first in the 22nd minute when Mikel Oyarzabal coolly converted a penalty after a French defender brought down a Spanish attacker inside the box. The goal gave La Roja a deserved 1-0 lead after they dominated the opening exchanges with their crisp passing and relentless pressing.
France tried to respond after the interval, but Spain tightened their grip on the contest in spectacular fashion. Pedro Porro produced a moment of magic in 58th minute with a thunderous long-range strike that beat the French goalkeeper all ends up, doubling Spain’s advantage. The stunning effort silenced the French challenge and ensured Spain cruised to a 2-0 victory, booking their place in the FIFA26 final for the first time since lifting the World Cup in 2010.
France, who had entered the semifinal on the back of impressive victories in the knockout rounds, looked surprisingly flat. Didier Deschamps’ men struggled to string together meaningful attacks and rarely tested the Spanish defence. Their midfield failed to gain control, while the forwards were isolated for long spells.
Much of the spotlight was on captain Kylian Mbappe, who had been France’s biggest attacking threat throughout the tournament. However, the Spanish defence executed its plan to perfection, denying the pacey forward space behind the backline. Mbappe received very few clear opportunities and was unable to register a goal, bringing an end to his impressive scoring run in the competition.
Spain’s disciplined defensive organisation ensured that France’s occasional bursts forward came to nothing. Whenever Mbappe attempted to accelerate into dangerous areas, he was quickly closed down by multiple defenders, forcing him into harmless positions.
Spain will now await the winner of the second semifinal between England and Argentina. France, meanwhile, will have to regroup quickly as they prepare for the third-place playoff, while Spain move one step away from capturing their second FIFA World Cup title.
