District Magistgrate Rudraprayag on Sunday said the situation in Nagrasu Gurdwara was normal amid reports that a group of Nihangs who have laid siege there, have agreed to leave the place and also release the lone pilgrim who was held hostage.
In a statement, District Magistrate Vishal Mishra said the Hemkund yatra is going on smoothly and the situation inside the Nagrasu Gurdwara was normal. He said a brawl had occurred inside the Gurdwara but all religious rituals were being performed without any hindrance.
Meanwhile, a top police official said “I think Nihangs have been persuaded to leave the Gurdwara and also to release the lone pilgrim who was held hostage.”
The Nihangs who were holding swords and other weapons were calling for release of their four associates who were arrested after a recent brawl in Karanprayag area.
Security remained tightened around the Gurdwar in view of the tension.
Police officials stationed near Nagrasu Gurdwara said the tension arose when 6-7 Nihangs holding swords and other weapons barged into the Sikh temple and started heated arguments with Gurudwara officials on Saturday evening.
When police arrived at the scene, the Nihangs went to the rooftop of the Gurdwar along with an old-aged pilgrim. The pilgrim was later held hostage as Nihangs started calling for the release of their four associates who were arrested in Karanprayag.
Four Nihangs were arrested recently at Karanprayag area when they allegedly attacked a group of local people.
