Doctors at Doon hospital on Saturday conducted a spine operation on Akash Kumar, a software engineer, who was pushed from a bridge after being allegedly robbed by two scooter-borne gangsters in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand.

No arrest has been made so far, police said.

Kumar (23) was returning home after completing his night shift duty at Sahastradhara Road in the early hours of Friday when he was allegedly waylaid by the gangsters on an Activa scooter and taken to Jamunwala area. Kumar was allegedly thrashed and robbed by the gangsters. Later, Kumar’s spine was broken after he was pushed from the Jamunwala bridge into the river from a considerable height.

In the morning, an injured Kumar was spotted by a temple priest lying under a bridge. Later, a group of army personnel rushed him to Doon hospital where the condition of Kumar was out of danger now.

“Operation is successful. Doctors are saying my son will be alright in the next few months,” said Vinod Kumar, a distraught father at the Doon hospital after the operation.

Akash Kumar’s father said he has submitted a written complaint against the unidentified gangsters at Premnagar police station on the whole incident. “My son has told us about the whole horrific incident,” said Vinod Kumar.

When contacted, SP City Pramod Kumar said an investigation has been launched into the incident from all angles using surveillance devices like CCTV cameras.
