People on Sunday switched off fans and ACs as thunderstorms accompanied with hails lashed several parts of north India including Uttarakhand plummeting the temperatures drastically.
Helicopter services for Kedarnath and other shrines remained disrupted for many hours due to poor visibility and weather conditions, official sources said. However, there was no hinderance to the pilgrims visiting Kedarnath through trek route despite intermittent rains.
The storm that blew with more than 50-60 kmph speed in Dehradun suddenly plunged the city into darkness at 9.30 AM. However, there was no report of any loss of life and property due to the storm.
“It is indeed very surprising that we are experiencing pleasant weather in May which is usually very hot,” said S K Sharma, a resident of Dehradun.
The storm came a day after a hailstorm hit Dehradun on Saturday evening. The hailstorm was also reported from Uttarkashi and many other parts of the state.
Reports said heavy rains and hailstorm hit several other parts of Uttarakhand including Mussoorie and Nainital.
Met office issued a warning saying thunderstorm accompanied with lightning / Hail/ intense to very intense spell of rain/gusty winds (speed 40-50 Kmph) likely to occur at isolated places in Dehradun, Haridwar, Tehri, Pauri, Nainital, Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar districts of Uttarakhand on Monday. The areas above 4000 feet may experience light snowfall.
IMD said the weather would remain wet with chances of thunderstorm hitting many places in the next few days till May 8 in north India including Uttarakhand.
