Canada etched their name into FIFA World Cup history by becoming the first team to qualify for the Round of 16 of the 2026 tournament after a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa in a gripping Round of 32 encounter.

Captain Stephen Eustaquio emerged as the hero, scoring a stunning stoppage-time winner to send the co-hosts into the next round and trigger wild celebrations among the home fans.

The knockout clash appeared destined for extra time as South Africa produced a disciplined and resilient defensive display, frustrating the Canadian attack for much of the contest. The African side defended in numbers, denied Canada clear scoring opportunities and looked well on course to stretch the match beyond regulation time.

However, Canada’s relentless pressure finally yielded rewards in the second minute of injury time. Eustaquio capitalised on a loose ball outside the penalty area and fired an emphatic strike beyond the South African goalkeeper, breaking the deadlock and sealing a memorable victory for the hosts.

The triumph marks Canada’s maiden win in a FIFA World Cup knockout match and highlights the remarkable rise of the North American nation under head coach Jesse Marsch. After progressing confidently from the group stage, the Canadians have now taken another significant step in what is already their most successful World Cup campaign.

Defender Alphonso Davies, who had been recovering from an injury, made an important second-half appearance to bolster Canada’s attack and add pace down the flanks. Following the match, Marsch hailed his players’ fighting spirit, calling them “Canadian heroes” for refusing to give up until the final whistle.

South Africa exited the tournament with their heads held high after a courageous performance. Their organised defence and determined effort kept one of the tournament’s hosts at bay for more than 90 minutes, but heartbreak came in the dying moments as Canada’s persistence finally paid off.

Canada will now face the winner of the Round of 32 clash between the Netherlands and Morocco in the Round of 16 on July 4. Buoyed by their historic breakthrough and growing confidence, the co-hosts will now believe they have the quality to make an even deeper run in the tournament.
