After top seed Jannik Sinner, it was the turn of tennis great Novak Djokovic to make an early exit from Roland Garros on Friday night after 19-year-old Brazilian sensation Joao Fonseca showed him the door.

Fonseca produced one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 French Open, defeating 24-time Grand Slam champion and third seed Djokovic in a thrilling third-round encounter that lasted nearly five hours.

The teenage star fought back from two sets down to beat the Serb 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 in a contest that showcased both the enduring greatness of Djokovic and the fearless rise of tennis’ next generation.

At 39, Djokovic appeared firmly in control after claiming the opening two sets with his trademark precision and experience. The three-time French Open champion seemed destined to move into the fourth round and continue his pursuit of a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title.

However, Fonseca refused to surrender. Displaying remarkable composure for a player making only his early appearances on the biggest stage, the Brazilian raised his level in the third set and broke Djokovic’s rhythm with powerful groundstrokes and aggressive shot-making. The teenager captured the third set 6-3 to ignite hopes of an unlikely comeback.

The fourth set developed into a tense battle of nerves. Fonseca held his nerve in crucial moments, edging the set 7-5 to force a deciding fifth set. With the crowd sensing history, both players traded blows in a gripping finale. Djokovic’s experience kept him in the contest, but Fonseca’s relentless attacking game eventually proved decisive as he sealed the fifth set 7-5.

The defeat ended Djokovic’s bid for a historic 25th Grand Slam title especially at a time when he was not facing the challenge of Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz at Roland Garros. This also marked one of the earliest exits of his illustrious Roland Garros career. It was only the second time the Serbian had lost a Grand Slam match after leading by two sets.

For Fonseca, the victory represents the biggest win of his young career. The Brazilian became the first teenager to defeat Djokovic in a Grand Slam tournament and advanced to the second week of a major for the first time.

While Djokovic left Paris disappointed, his fighting display at 39 earned widespread admiration. Yet the night belonged to Fonseca, whose fearless comeback may be remembered as the moment a new star born at Red Clay of Paris.
